Misplaced Book Presents a Curious Dilemma

This week's story is Mushroom in the Rain.  I own the book, however I cannot locate it. Students have searched high and low, but to no avail. The library copy is checked out and I need it tomorrow.  What is a teacher to do? I think I will work with what I have----the anthology.  I will present the story in the manner in which the publishing company directs. Ugh, it will be difficult to keep it exciting. My students have been engaged with the stories over the past five weeks and test results have been encouraging.  I am curious to see if this week will be any different.  I plan on returning to the presentation, NO PREJUDICE HERE, to compare/contrast.  I will take anecdotal notes during the course of the story this week. Of course I want the children to experience success with the lessons this week, but it would be rather cool if they ask to see the "real" book!  I hope they do.

I believe your book is.... where ever my sunglasses are..... no matter how "prepared" we are, something pops up to disrupt the flow. I hope your students do ask for the book, this is an investment I think our districts should make- every school library should have the "real" books- and maybe not purchase the "big screen TV" ...hummmm, loved the blog- march on and let us know how the story went!

I love to see reading comprehension from the perspective of the elementary teacher! Our ARP's are connected in that I am also researching strategies and methods to improve literacy, specifically in the content area of science reading comprehension. This summer I completed the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project at CSU Fresno and found that even secondary science teachers can use picture books to introduce new concepts/topics. I have always found that no matter how old our students get they still love to play on elementary school "monkey bars" and read "picture books." Good luck! I can't wait to see more.

I hate when I loose things...It is very frustrating, but it will be interesting to see if there is a difference in your students' comprehension. I thought of you today when I order a book titled "Teaching reading comprehension though picture books"..My thoughts in ordering are that I can take ideas from it and adapt them to use through art..because I haven't found anything really GOOD on teaching through art...I have been making it all up, but I wonder if there is something in the book I can use...I hope to get it soon...maybe if it's good we can meet up and I'll let you borrow it hehe..don't forget to let us know how you scores turned out.
